Water heater problems fill homeowners with dread because new water heaters can cost thousands of dollars. However, some water heater problems are fixable. The popular YouTube channel Pros DIY looks at what could be wrong with your water heater.
You do need to call a water heater repair professional if the thermostat is not working. Most water heaters will automatically shut off when the water reaches 190 degrees.
If you keep getting cold water and everything else looks okay, it’s probably a broken thermostat.
Check to see that your water heater is getting power. Is the power cord frayed? Did a circuit break or trip for an electric water heater? Electric water heaters have a switch for safety that may have shut the water heater off. Turn it back on.
If you have a gas heater, is the pilot light on? If the pilot light is on and there is no blinking light nearby, test the thermopile’s voltage to see if it is producing the recommended amount. If it’s not producing enough voltage, then call a repair service to replace the thermopile. If the thermopile is working, then it’s the gas valve that needs replacing.
