Tankless water heaters are often touted as a better option than traditional water heater tanks, but how much of that is true? While a tankless water heater may convey benefits to some homes, it may not for everyone. This video explains some of the downsides to tankless water heaters so that you can decide if it’s the right choice for your home.
Tankless water heaters are attractive to homeowners for a few reasons. They heat water up as hot water is running, and turn off when it isn’t. This can mean lower water bills. They also take up much less space than a traditional water heater and so may be part of basement renovations.
However, the fact that tankless water heaters run on electricity means you’re more susceptible to losing hot water during power outages. Traditional tanks will hold a few gallons of hot water at a time. If the power goes out, they can supply your home with hot water for up to 12 hours. Tankless water heaters don’t hold hot water in reserve, so make sure you have a backup generator in case of power outages.
As mentioned above, tankless water heaters can help with energy efficiency, but it’s dependent on the way you run your water supply. If you have a home with multiple people who like to take long showers, you may not get the cost-saving benefits.
