Does Your Commercial or Residential Building Need a Lighting Upgrade? Choose LED Fixtures

Lighting uses about 22% of the electricity that is generated in this country, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Currently, approximately 11% of the energy usage in residential buildings and 18% in commercial buildings is for the purpose of lighting. While there are a variety of lighting sources and systems, some last longer and are more energy-efficient than others.

Fluorescent bulbs and ballasts tend to have an average lifespan of around 20,000 hours. When compared to other light sources, they do not last as long. Induction bulbs, for example, can provide from 60 to 70 or even more lumens per watt in many instances, and usually have a lifespan of 100,000 hours.

LEDs just use 15% of the energy required by standard halogen lights. They are also able to provide as much as 85% more light and usually have a 50,000-hour lifespan. Given the continued effort to increase energy efficiency, more buildings, parking garages, roadways, and other areas now have LED lighting. This form of illumination has the capacity to reduce energy usage by almost 50%, according to estimates made by the U.S. Department of Energy.

In order to increase energy efficiency, it makes sense to opt for LEDs rather than other light sources, such as fluorescent tube replacements. When an office or other business establishment chooses LED fixtures, they will have a longer-lasting source of interior and exterior light. LEDs can also provide an excellent source of light for large spaces. This includes areas which may need low and/or high bay light fixtures such as warehouses.

When fluorescent tube replacements are needed for exterior or semi-exterior lighting for parking garages, LED fixtures are a more efficient and effective option. LED parking garage lighting can be used in those areas where the law requires light to be provided on a 24-hour basis. Even when the law may not require these areas to be illuminated 24 hours a day, it makes sense to do so for security purposes.

If your commercial or residential building needs a lighting upgrade, you will be interested to know that LED fixtures come in a variety of styles. They can also emit different colors of light, which can be beneficial for both interior and exterior purposes. Given their longevity and reduced energy consumption, it makes sense to switch to LED light fixtures.
