The holiday season is officially upon us. While big meals with friends and family, magical winter snowfalls, and feelings of cheer and joy fill the air, we shouldn’t forget that with holiday excitement comes risk.
Winter weather brings cold conditions thatch often cause plumbing problems in many households. Trouble with sinks or toilets are common in the winter, as are other unforeseen issues. To help prepare you for the unexpected, here are three ways to prevent the most common winter plumbing problems:
Frozen Pipes
Frozen pipes are extremely common, especially in the northern states. This usually happens when freezing temperatures meet high water pressure in the main pipe. In order to prevent this, it’s important to keep your thermostat above 50 degrees. Keeping the heat on will likely keep the pipes functioning well, but if not, it’s best to keep the faucets open just a bit. Allowing water to flow continuously through the pipe will prevent the pipes from being shocked by the immense cold.

Breaks in your water lines can cause sever damage to your home or business. Leaking pipes are often caused by pipes that have been frozen and thawed, causing pipe corrosion problems. Before cold weather hits, be sure to disconnect your hose from the water spout. Otherwise, ice can build up inside of the spout and cause a break. Be sure to drain and disconnect them well before the first freeze of the season.
Failed Hot Water Systems
Hot water systems are another common cause of plumbing problems, especially in colder climates. While no one likes taking a cold shower, for those who live in colder areas of the country, a failing hot water system is an even bigger problem. If your hot water is not up to its normal temperature, check that the temperature is set at the appropriate level. If you have a gas water heater, check to see if the pilot light is lit.
When checking your boiler room or area where your hot water heater is kept, be sure to exercise caution when checking the temperature. Although your water may be cold, its possible that the heater may still be very hot. If you rent your home or apartment, its best to call your landlord o building supervisor to check on the problem.
