Keep Home Design Inexpensive, Bold, and Creative

Dining room lighting

Did you know as many as 42% of all Americans get starry-eyed at the prospect of redecorating their homes? The number one reason people continue to hesitate, instead of lighting out after their dreams? Money. Many U.S men and women do not realize that home design on a budget is possible, and, with a little creativity and smarts, can be one of the best decisions you will ever make. How can homeowners combine creativity and practicality to redesign their homes, starting with the living room?

Lighting, affordable living room furniture, and decorations can all help amp up the pizzazz of a stale living room. There is, however, a wrong way to do it. Consider this list of don’ts, closely followed by the right things to do.

Don’t

  • Knock Down Walls. Walls can contain wiring, plumbing, gas lines, and heating ducts. Rewiring them is just one of the many costs you will incur. Other costs include sanding, painting, clean up, and more.
  • Choose a Dark Color Scheme For Small Rooms. Dark colors send a bold message, and many homeowners are tempted to use them whenever, and wherever, they can. Resist this particular urge. Why? Dark colors can make smaller spaces seem even smaller, and Harvard studies suggest a connection between lack of light and depression.
  • Forget to Read Your Lease. If you are renting, you may not be allowed to paint the walls. Even with these restrictions, you still have plenty of options. Focus instead on wall decor and furnishings, like living room table sets.

Do

  • Use Lighting to Manipulate Space. If small rooms get a lot of natural light, painting them white will reflect the most light, and help open up the room. If small spaces have limited lighting, choose a bold, warm color. Always remember to stick to warm color choices. For example, stick with yellows, peaches, and bright, bold greens. Use the right living room table sets to help offset walls, too. Tiny spaces are best-suited by glass, or see-through, table tops. When it comes to couches, chairs, and loveseats for small spaces, on the other hand, bigger is better. According to designer David Kaihoi, “Big furniture makes a small room seem grander.” In a living room with smaller dimensions, why not consider a large, L-shaped couch to complement the room?
  • Favor Sustainable Furniture. All materials are not created equal. Consider wood for chairs and formal dining room tables. When it comes time to switch things up, you can easily refinish, polish, or paint over wooden furniture.
  • Choose Living Room Artwork Carefully. One of the easiest ways to open up a room is to use reflective decorations. Consider hanging a wall-sized mirror, or choose from beveled and tiled mirrors. Mirrors will reflect light, and make a small space appear larger.

Whether you are painting, selecting artwork, or looking at affordable living room table sets, remember that home design on a budget is more than possible.
