An Interview With Sandi Norris of Borsello Landscaping

Sandi Norris began her college career at Penn State as a Health and Nutrition major. However, after realizing that she did not want to spend her days in a cubicle, she moved into the landscaping industry. We sat down to talk with her about how she got her start with Borsello Landscaping.

Ms. Norris, what inspired you to get into landscaping?

While I was in college, under the major of Health and Nutrition, I realized that I didn’t want to be stuck inside an office or cubicle all day long. I grew up in the country, and I was always involved in sports and had horses my whole life. I rarely was inside. I knew that there had to be something greater out there for me.

I don’t blame you! How did you get your first job?

I saw some signs for a landscape company in my home town, and figured I had nothing to lose, so I gave them a call. After my first summer there, my boss told me that he never thought I’d last a week! I stayed with him throughout college, up until the point where I decided to move away for bigger and better things. I spent my days at his company out in the field, with the guys. I was in charge of knowing how to do everything the guys did, ranging from lawn maintenance to construction. There are plenty of patios and walls in my hometown that I spent countless hours working to build. After that first summer of landscaping, I declared Landscape Construction as my major, and I graduated from Penn State in 2002.

Well congrats! When did you end up with Borsello?

I spent two and a half years with an employer before I caved under the pressure. I decided I should be my own boss. I took a hiatus from the building industry to train horses, and in my free time, I started the freelance design company that would eventually lead me to Borsello Landscaping.

What is that like today?

I collaborate with Mike on everything from the client notes to the measurements, up until the final design is presented. We really have a good thing going with our design process and it truly is a joy for me to come to work every day!
